Winter in Zagreb

Zagreb is the capital of Croatia. It is situated in the inside part of the country and has nothing to see with the image that one has of the Croatian town by the sea with stone houses.

Zagreb is another face of Croatia. A different culture that has been influenced for centuries by the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

It is a place where I like to go especially during winter, because of its continental climate that covers it with snow for Christmas. The center of the city is reserved for pedestrians and the famous blue trams. The streets get alive with Christmas decorations, they have a smell of hot chestnuts and mulled wine.

You should go to the main square Ban Jelačić where there is an outdoor skating rink from the beginning of December. After this physical effort, enjoy a moment of comfort… mulled wine and hot sausage sandwiches are served under a tent on the main square.

If you love sports you should know that the mountain Medvednica is situated only 15 km from Zagreb’s center and you can reach it by public transport. Its ski resort Sljeme welcomes the Snow Queen trophy at the beginning of January, it is a World Cup alpine ski race where come the best world skiers.

Snow Queen is the name we give to Croatian skier Janica Kostelić. Together with her brother Ivica she took her first steps on the slopes of Sljeme. The women’s race is organized on her birthday on January 5th, the men’s race on January 7th.

She has won 30 FIS World Cup races, she has been 5 time world champion and is one of the few athletes to have won four gold medals at the Salt Lake City Olympic Games in 2002 and Turin in 2006. She ended her career in 2006 at the age of 24.

Her brother Ivica still participates to competitions and is one of the best skiers in the world.

After skiing, go to the pedestrian streets in the center where you can enjoy a drink in one of the many cafés with heated terraces.

During your stay in Zagreb cheer on Zagreb excellent Hockey team called the Medveščak.

There are so many restaurants in Zagreb. Do not miss to try traditional dishes of the region such as turkey with ‘Mlinci‘, or ‘Štrukli’ with cheese.
